Airports Company South Africa, ACSA, was formed in 1993 as a public company under the Companies Act of 1973. Although ACSA is majority owned by the South African Government, the Company is legally and financially autonomous under commercial law. The Company was formed to own and operate the nine principal South African airports. This includes the three main international gateways of O.R Tambo, Cape Town and King Shaka International Airports. They also extend their responsibilities to include the promotion of tourism, the facilitation of economic growth and job creation, and the protection of the environment. ACSA airports have won 20 achievement awards for passenger satisfaction, to date. This is because of the Airport Council International’s (ACI’s) Airport Service Quality Programme. Currently, 180 airports around the world take part in this programme. ACSA operates the following international airports: O.R Tambo International Airport, Cape Town International Airport, King Shaka International Airport, Bram Fischer International Airport, Upington International Airport, Port Elizabeth International Airport, Sáo Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport. They also operate the following National Airports: East London Airport, George Airport, Kimberley Airport. ACSA contributes greatly to job creation in South Africa. This is achieved through infrastructure investment and the partnerships they develop with the private sector. "Not everything can be perfect"

It is a fine company to work for. I believe that this company provides a lot of room for growth opportunity and the company is definitely competing on an international level. However, not everything can be perfect. The working hours required is challenging and the shifts are unpleasant.

Great working experience with reasonable working hours. But management from above isn't always up to scratch and leaves little to no room to grow into the company. Every day at work is exciting and challenging and very fast paced.

I love my company,but truth be told...my previous HOD was the best. But the current management is not really giving people justice at all.When I am off, I feel like extending my off days. It's either their way or the high way. Salary terms is horrendous. I am trusting God to see me through this horrible situation.Staff its actual not considered important.

ACSA took us on a leranership programme and we were paid R1800 stipend when they were suppose to grant us our certification before the contract of 12 months finished. They forced us to sign continuation of contract for 5 more months on the same salary and when I refused, they threatened not to give us our certification and said it will be like we have wasted our year working for them. I was told to either resign and if I don't they said I must terminate the contract. I said 'how can I terminate a contract that is not finished?' After I left the Learners who were finishing a year in January, they were all taken permanently without a question. ACSA is very unfair when it comes to employees. There is no growth. You will work in one position for years and someone will come today and be promoted. To date, I have not received my certification of that learnership. I was mistreated and yet after all the suffering I have gone through there is no compensation of even getting the certification I have studied for.

I have worked for ACSA from 1994 till 2009. I started as a Passenger Security Officer on 10 October 1994 and thereafter deployed as a Crime Prevention on a newly formed unit at the time. One gained a lot of experience in dealing with various crimes raging from human smuggling, theft, drugs etc. I really appreciate the opportunity for exposure on how to openly deal with criminal matters and security compliance. As time goes on, I happen to step on the toes of some other superior personnel and that led to the closure of the unit. I was forced to go back and work under the people I was previously investigating and that put a lot of stress on me since I was public enemy number one. Although I was very intelligent and experienced, I was always sidelined for promotions.I had to work very hard to be promoted to Senior Security Officer position. In 1999, I was chosen by the SAPS to join the new unit called Mobile Support Unit which reduced crime at all levels at the airport. The unit was also later closed down without reasons. That forced me to go back to Passenger Security as a supervisor and later the position of surveillance analyst became available. I applied just like any other person and I was appointed. No additional increase was added to my salary as they said it was a transfer. that astonished me as to why I had to go through the interviews with all the others although it was a transfer. I really did not like the way the whole thing was done but did not have any choice as I really wanted to move from passenger security. I worked very hard and became the master when it came to performance in the control room as a Surveillance Analyst. But still, my potential and hard-work could not be recognised when it came to PMS and promotions. Promotions were given to people who did not even understand operation. That really hurt me a lot but i told myself that I should not be demoralised in performing my duties. I continued to work harder and harder in assisting all the stakeholders and passengers during their investigations and my potential was recognised by one of the stakeholders who became interested in me and asked me to join his company. after carefully looking at all the risks of leaving the permanent job from the landlord (ACSA) to join one of the handling agents. I then tendered my resignation. I have realised that there is no easy way to success and really thanked all those challenges and hardships that one had to go through. ACSA is a very good company but at times, individuals make it difficult to make it conducive for the staff. With my 15 years in the company, it was still difficult for me to get R13000 a month. This also affected my family financially as I was also paying for my bond. Thank you very much.
