British American Tobacco South Africa (BATSA) is part of the British American Tobacco Group which operates in over 180 countries around the world. The company was birthed in South Africa in 1904 and became an industry leader in its first year. There are more than 20 brands in the BATSA portfolio. The company makes the cigarette of choice for about nine out of ten of the South Africa’s five million smokers. They contribute almost R8-billion per annum to the government. Their priorities include building relationships of trust with consumers, suppliers, distributors and partners while managing high quality brands. BATSA owns roughly 65% of the legitimate tobacco market in South Africa. The company has eight trade marketing regions and six regional distribution offices across South Africa. They purchase up to 60% of the South African tobacco crop annually for local and international production. The BATSA factory in Heidelberg produces about 26 billion cigarettes for local and international markets every year and 1400 tonnes of cutrag tobacco for export. In terms of social investment, British American Tobacco South Africa spends an annual R30-million on projects, largely in the areas of empowerment, sustainable agriculture, civic life and HIV/Aids.
