Build it is a voluntary organisation of independent retailers, and a subsidiary of the SPAR Group Limited, specialising in building materials and related hardware like cement, roofing material, fencing, plumb-ware, structural timber, power tools and much more. Their first store launched in 1984 in Kwazulu-Natal with a membership of only 20 independent retailers. In 2000 it was decided to expand the company to other provinces, and within five years it grew to more than 172 independent retailers. The organisation currently has a membership of approximately 285 stores in South Africa and other African countries including Lesotho, Swaziland Namibia and Mozambique and they plan on soon expanding to Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mauritius. Build it caters for all those interested, or active in the building and hardware industry including renovators and Do It Yourself aficionados looking to build a basic urban house or renovate it.

"Not your average cashier"

I always say, I might just be a cashier, but I'm a cashier at Build It. Unlike your average grocery store, here at Build It, the cashier (whether it be a female) deals with hardware on a daily basis. You are required to assist all customers with their queries. I remember one day, I found myself carrying a five litre paint tin for a male customer (and I'm a female). He even asked me to carry it to his car in the parking. I didn't mind, because this is my job and I am proud of it.

"Long working hours"

I am currently working at a Build It branch in the Western Cape. What was told to me in my job interview, is totally different to what 'm being compelled to do now. Initially, I bargained for a nine to five job. I started working nine to five, but as time went on, the hours just increased. I think it's because it increased so gradually that I didn't notice the difference until my body became physically tired. I am now at that point where I don't have a social life and the free time that I do get, I use to get some sleep.
