I did the Shoprite Checkers learnership and from there, I was lucky enough to get a permanent position as a perishable general assistance. Believe me, my schedule was horrible. I worked 11 to 8 everyday and also work every weekend. The store manager will always be on my neck, telling me that he hired me only because of the learnership and that I should resign. I ended up just sitting home not going to work. Even today, I'm sure he's very happy that I didn't even resign I just disappeared.

checkers as a whole is a good stable well established company to work for. I just think that the top people must do some serious under cover work in the stores to sort out staffing problems, customer service etc.

From an in-store point of view working for Checkers wasn't always easy due to long hours, small wages/salaries and sometimes abusive managers. Training isn't offered and would doing your job much easier as most of the things you learn there is from other staff members. Its is however faster to work your way to management positions then other companies I know of but you have to be willing to give up a lot of personal time to get there.

Hi; According my experience having worked for various companies before checkers is the worst in regards with human capital investment..Training; development; support; poor remuneration poor working conditions and lack of professionalism; poor leadership skills; working excessive illegal hours...in a nutshell to be an employee for checkers is a disaster...will never work for that company ever again..serving my resignation notice as week..

Checkers really is a good company with friendly staff always ready to assist you in any which way. The prices of some of their prices are sometimes a bit too expensive unnecessarily. otherwise Checkers is a very high quality company and always give back to the communities. However, I would appreciate it if the company not only gives back to the town/city the company is situated in, but also the surrounding areas.

Nothing matters, especially People. you can give the company your heart and soul and yet, nothing will come from that. Hard work is life and so is long hours. The company is still stuck in the 70's as far as people management and development. The company is being run with an iron fist with no room for initiative. In today's world I would seriously not recommend checkers as a career choice. The company does not offer competitive salary packages. Woollies and PnP is far more serious and in touch with today's economy and their staff. Far from being BEE compliant. If you're a serious investor, woollies and PnP would be my choice as they are companies of repute.

Ok, so it's not a big company, but they do make a lot of money.Sometimes it's hard to work with customers and treat them properly, because some of them are rude and don't give you the chance to be nice to them, but I have to say that our bosses try their best to encourage us to do our best. They are strict at times, but it's only because they are trying to keep their business running. To them it's important to keep the customers happy, because it's a long-term thing. These people come to the shop daily to do their shopping and who is going to go back to a shop where you feel uncomfortable and get bad service? So I don't blame them for being strict like any other company. We all have our ups and downs.
Best companies to work for in the Retail sector.
