Department of Economic Development

The Economic Development Department is a new department formed after the 2009 elections. It is an endeavour established at strengthening government capability to implement transformation of South Africa’s economy. The aim of the Economic Development Department is promoting economic development through participatory, coherent and coordinated economic policy and planning for the benefit of all South Africans. The department’s approach is to address structural constraints, absorbing large numbers of people into the economy and the creation of decent work. The department consists of a four programme structure and service delivery model namely; Administration, Economic Policy Development, Economic Planning & Coordination and Economic Development & Dialogue. These are integrated rather than separate governmental programmes for policy coherence in respect of macro and micro economic policies and economic and social policies.
