Dischem started out as a small pharmacy in 1978 in Mondeor, Johannesburg. The Professional Management Review rated it as the best and most successful pharmacy chain in South Africa. The pharmacy is privately owned and run by its founding members, Ivan and Lynette Saltzman. The pharmacy offers a large range of facilities catering to various medical needs. These facilities include a clinic that offers health screening for diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, anaemia and high cholesterol; a baby clinic; a hair salon (certain branches); a skincare clinic (certain branches); Dischem Vison and a dispensary. It provides a courier pharmacy service for the delivery of prescribed medication. The group established a benefit programme that enables customers to earn points redeemable on their next purchase; a portion of the transaction value of their purchase is donated to the Dischem Foundation. The Dischem Foundation enables Dischem to give back to the community by donating to local charities.

"COMMUNICATION"
Added 13 Oct 2013 by a current employee
Working for Dischem was cool for a while. They have grown too quickly and the management is still treating it like a small company. Communication and support for you in your job position from higher management is very poor: selective and poor. If you voice a complaint just to improve the experience of your customers, it is seen as "negative" and you get labeled "not a team player." Customers would point things out to me and I would just nod my head and say, "yes, I know, but I am unwilling to come up on the radar as a negative person, if we bring this issue to management. How about writing an email to the MD about it?" In the end you just never complained about anything. That way you were not victimised or singled out as a 'white ant'. It made you feel completely disenfranchised from your job, and in some cases keeping quiet went against your principles and values.

Strong branding, a good product range that meets customers' pharmaceutical, health and beauty needs. Low prices and valuable customer relationships.
Best companies to work for in the Pharmaceuticals sector.
