I was super excited to have finally been offered an opportunity to work for Edcon, but when I got to the store it was an entirely different script. The poorly managed, under staffed store has workers from every other department picking clothes off the floor (which they do not get paid for, neither is it part of their employment contracts) and replacing them onto hangers and then back onto clothing rails. Pricing, folding and hanging new clothing and intimate garments, regardless of the persons gender and personal beliefs. I find it sad that all the managers are female and that it's okay to scream at their staff in front of customers and hurl obscene and abusive language. What exactly are the people in forensics watching? I know many people have complained and managers get big chested and take it personally when their colleagues are reported, but still, why has Edcon not resolved this abusive manner to staff? On the other hand, Edcon is a company that is held in high esteem and I find it difficult to believe that all the stores are run this way, but in the same breath I find it disturbing that people are allowed to tarnish the brand this way.

Politics is the order of the day. If you play your cards right, you will enjoy the benefits of doing very little work for a premium salary. Hard workers are just that - hard-workers. The company has a tendency of restructuring and the advertising positions a few weeks after retrenching staff.

"Edcon Experiance"

Joining edcon was an opportunity that I was excited about. With the reviews I had read on how it was considered the best company to work for, I joined the company with high expectations set out. The training program for planners and all other roles was promising and a new on boarding experience. The company equips you with the necessary training to get you going as soon as you hit your desk. After starting to do the actual work, it soon came to my realisation that the company might not be as great as it's made out to be. I realised it was all about profit and profit which should be the case for business, however I felt that little attention and recognition was given to the progress of the individual. Promotion was far fetched it seamed. External people were being employed for higher positions while those that have been loyal and performing for years were overlooked. The only way up for them was to go out of the company and in a few years get reappointed in higher positions. This was discouraging for me and I was not prepared to put my self through that. I believed that many of the people who have been with the company three years plus, deserved some form of promotion within the company. Sadly, a lot that were close to me ended up leaving without the promotion being realised. As a result of how I saw things, I did not stay long myself. The first door that opened, I took a step in and I am glad. I stayed for six months and I have been at my current company for almost two years and counting.
Best companies to work for in the Retail sector.
