The first Exclusive Books store was founded as a tiny second-hand bookshop in 1951 by Philip and Pamela Joseph. It grew from there and finally in 1993 their flagship store was opened in Hyde Park. Since their humble beginnings and after their flagship store opened the company hasn’t stopped growing and in 1999 they evolved from just selling books to creating a lifestyle oriented experience. Their most prominent addition was the Seattle Coffee Company’s coffee shops adjoining some of their stores as well as the retail of merchandise other than books like board games, reading accessories like portable lamps and portable electronic dictionaries, mugs and more. The company also opened its first online shopping website in 1999 and re-launched it in 2006. Today they have more than 50 stores nationwide stocking more than 600 000 titles.

When I first started working for Exclusive Books, everything seemed to go well. Unfortunately it did not stay that way as they overwork their competent staff and make allowances for weak employees due to friendships or influences. I am sad to see the staggering staff turn over due to the unnecessary pressure placed on those that do know what they are doing, being dragged down and disheartened by those who do not. There is no growing opportunities, and should there be positions opening above yours, expect it to be outsourced.
Best companies to work for in the Retail sector.
