First National Bank, the oldest bank in South Africa, trades as a division of FirstRand Bank Limited. The history of FNB can be traced back to the Eastern Province Bank, which was formed in Grahamstown in 1838. In 1998 the financial services interests of Rand Merchant Bank Holdings and Anglo American, merged and FirstRand Limited was formed. FNB was delisted from the JSE on 22 May 1998 to become a wholly owned subsidiary of FirstRand, which was listed on the JSE on 25 May 1998. The Acacia tree in FNB’s brand logo is a representation of their history. Their roots run deep in South Africa, and they have grown thanks to their commitment to serving the needs of their clients and communities. Specialties from FNB include a full range of banking services to individuals that include savings, deposit and cheque accounts, credit cards, overdraft facilities, mortgage finance and loans.

I have worked for fnb from May 2005 up to December 2012. I enjoyed every moment. Lots of growth opportunities, lots to learn. The greatest innovative bank. I would go back in a heartbeat. It was and i believe still is a great company to work for even with all the ups and down.

"Work under a lot of pressure"

Have to work independently and under a lot of pressure. Having great colleagues and being able to dress casually. Working long hours and managing difficult customers can be a drag.

"FNB Review"

I worked at FNB for about 3 years. One of the things I appreciated was the spirit of "Ubuntu", which is one of their values, that was exhibited by a lot of colleagues in my department. Innovation is greatly appreciated which is why it recently won the most innovative bank award. Beyond that I found that in my department specifically, you had to be white to get a promotion or have been friends and sucking up to management for years before you can be successful for a position. Even when better qualified and shown you can do the job better than the person they appointed. I liked working for FNB but I would never go back. I'm much happier as an engineer. My value as an employee is not measured by skin color.

"Work Condtions at FNB"
Added 18 Jul 2013 by a current employee
I worked at FNB as Senior Manager / Executive for 6 years. In general FNB does not promote EE candidates to senior positions and some senior people are quite discriminatory when it comes to appreciating the value of work produced by EE candidates and will often frustrate one which resulted in ne and many others like myself ultimately leaving the bank. The positions especially at senior levels are skewed towards the minority and don't reflect the markets in which the bank operates.

"Admin officer"

FNB is generally a good company to work for . I have worked for FNB as an Admin officer for five years without any growth offers, tried applying for supervisory positions but was never considered. the most painful thing is there was this white lady who joined three years after me and I personally gave the lady the in-service training only for her to become my Supervisor a year later for the same position I also applied for. If you working at branch banking you are not considered for head office positions, if you working at head office you are not considered for branch banking positions you qualify for.
Best companies to work for in the Banking sector.
