"my work experience at Groupon"
Added 14 Aug 2015 by a current employee
I started working at Groupon less than a year ago. Having 20years plus experience in sales as a top salesperson nationally, I was very excited to say the least to work at Groupon. I thrive on challenges and am a solutions based salesperson. I am very positive and always strive to give more than what is required. The deal offer to clients is definitely a difficult sale but IS doable. I was very dissapointed in my line manager's style of management as no encouragement nor motivation or positive re inforcement. Just insults and constant shouting "why are u not on the phone",which is unreasonable if u busy dialing a number to make the next call? This is just one example of many.Very embarressing as its an open plan office. Thus whatever happened in our department, other departments witnessed. Even working voluntarily an hour earlier and leaving half an hour to an hour later was not appreciated as line manager would time and again even question taking lunch? Working for Groupon unfortunately, turned out to be the worst decision ever made.

"Great for launching eCommerce careers"

This is the kind of company you only work for one year only and leave. Very Mickey Mouse operation and doesn't encourage employee growth outside of the Sales department.

"Not for the Fainthearted "

I'm generally quite optimistic, but I can honestly say that during the time that I worked for Groupon I struggled to find reasons to get up in the mornings. Working in the customer services department within any company has it's bad days, but being at Groupon felt like a constant downward spiral into a dark tunnel with no sign of light at the end. Deals were constantly running, stock numbers never matched the amount of orders, servers were crashing, products were faulty, customers were complaining, management was stressing and the customer service department was getting all the blame. At one time, our inbox had over 2000 unanswered emails of which +/- 80% were customer complaints and the phone lines had a waiting line of 65 callers. Everything felt impossible to manage and no one had any truthful answers for the poor service delivered by Groupon. I remember having constant migraines and neck pains during my employment; caused by the stress of having to make deadlines and if not met, receiving verbal or written warnings on a daily basis. I honestly had no idea before I started working at Groupon that all the above was going on. They have managed to keep their service delivery downfalls to a minimum, but if you want a good reflection of what Groupon is all about, just visit Hello Peter, the evidence is all there.

"Over promise and under deliver"
Added 19 Jul 2013 by a current employee
Groupon promises you the world but hardly lives up to it. Astronomical figures are promised in terms of commission, but the commission structure is constantly changed to ensure that you do not earn too much. Groupon is a high pressure environment (like many companies) where staff are often "worked out" in a very short period of time, if they do not meet targets or are not well liked by management. A colleague of mine who was performing consistently was 'performance-managed' for not making target for one month. You are encouraged to lie in order to get meetings with potential clients. Senior management reap the benefits of sales staff's hard work who are treated like factory workers. There is an inner circle of staff (management) who essentially decide who is in and who is out. Written warnings are dished out like its candy. Senior management constantly contradicts themselves. It is a management culture of stick, where you are beaten until you cannot handle it any more. Not one senior manager has any leadership attributes. Forget about raising issues with HR, since they are part of the inner circle. Average life cycle of the few sales staff who make target is a year - maximum, when most of them find new positions or leave willingly. If you work there, get used to people resigning on a regular basis. Forget about weekends. Groupon generally has a very bad perception out there with ex staff, clients as well as customers. The only positive, which contradicts the above, is that if you survive without being worked out or resigning, your next job will be a breeze. You also learn hard core sales, which will benefit you for the rest of your life. So if you still want to go work there, go into it with caution and decide what you want to get out of it.

"Awesome Company"
Added 18 Jul 2013 by a current employee
I have worked for Groupon for over two and a half years and have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the company. I started off as a junior manager and in a very short space of time, I've been promoted and given additional responsibility. Groupon is a results orientated company, which reward and develop employees who show are eagerness in learning and progressing. I would highly recommend it as not just a place of work, but a career choice!

"Hard work, great rewards"
Added 18 Jul 2013 by a current employee
There are great opportunities in the company and the sky is the limit. It is an intense environment, with loads of challenges, however hard work is recognised and rewarded. You will gain a wealth of experience that is difficult to find anywhere else. The exhilaration of being part of a successful startup produces pride and a sense of accomplishment that is extraordinary.

"Great Potential"
Added 18 Jul 2013 by a current employee
Working for Groupon has been the most frustrating, scary and rewarding experience of my life. No company is perfect. Groupon is no exception. However, I would not trade this experience for anything in the world. It's fast, it's challenging, intense and pressurised. I have learnt more here at Groupon than I would have, in years, at another comapny. Groupon is the leader in online marketing and for that reason I am proud to be part of the fastest growing e-commerce company in history. I am literally contributing to history. This comes with obvious challenges. If you cannot work in a fast-paced, target driven environment where change is literally the only constant, then Groupon is not for you. If you thrive on challenges, you need to be constantly kept busy and challenged and you want to join the online sphere to kick-start your career with a genuine kick, then I recommend Groupon wholeheartedly. It's dynamic and the staff are like family.

"Real on the job learning"
Added 18 Jul 2013 by a current employee
I have never worked for such a fast paced and driven business before. We all work really hard to make a new internet based start-up a success and have been given huge opportunity to learn. Great to be in a new groundbreaking business.

"Horrible in every regard."
Added 09 Jun 2013 by a current employee
Groupon Cape Town and SA is full of Smoke and Mirrors. I was lied to upon being hired about my hours and commute. In training I was encouraged to lie about Groupon. My manager encouraged me to lie about my past experience. All in all, this is supposed to be an amazing and successful company, but in reality they are a group of disorganised party boys who will do anything for a buck. Do not do business with this company and please do not waste your time thinking about working for them. High turnover, poor moral amongst employees, and a very unprofessional environment.
Best companies to work for in the Internet sector.
