Makro is one of the biggest and most popular cash and carry stores in South Africa. The first Makro opened its doors in 1971 in Germiston, Gauteng, becoming the first cash and carry in operation in South Africa at the time. Makro grew from there and in 2011 they signed a merger with United States based Retail Company Wallmart and Massmart. Currently Makro has 19 cash and carry stores in major metropolitan areas within the borders of South Africa, trading in food, liquor and other general merchandise like computers, home entertainment, office supplies, sports gear, clothing, home decor, appliances, hardware and much more. Makro offers bulk purchase of goods as well as catering to individual customers. Customers need a Makro card which is scanned before a purchase and the company also offers online shopping.

"Makro Rossburgh"
Added 08 Sep 2013 by a current employee
From an employee's point of view, the Rossburgh branch was absolutely pathetic to work for. I remained as a casual for 4 long years without a pay increase and management are never concerned about it. They just replace people and couldn't care less if those people could make a living or provide for their family. Not to mention the excuse that you are a casual so you have to do what some lazy permanent employee instructs you to do. Not to mention, no benefits at all, and you're employed by a labour broker. As a cashier, if you go short on the till point, the money is illegally taken from your salary , absolutely disgusting
Best companies to work for in the Retail sector.
