The largest diagnostic pathology service in South Africa is known as the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS). Their responsibility is to support the national and provincial health departments in the delivery of healthcare. Through a national network of laboratories, the NHLS provides laboratory and related public health services to over 80% of South Africa’s population. With laboratories in all the nine provinces of South Africa, their activities comprise of diagnostic laboratory services, research, teaching and training, and production of sera for anti-snake venom, reagents and media. NHLS’s specialized divisions include the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, National Institute for Occupational Health, National Cancer Registry and the South African Vaccine Producers (which houses the Anti-venom unit). All of these are also divisions of the NHLS.

"Worst Registrar Employer"
Added 29 Jun 2016 by a current employee
Registrar posts are not filled, so registrars are over worked. Consultants get paid overtime but work very little overtime which is left for the registrars to cover. Pay is extremely bad - people with a 3 year degree get paid more than these qualified doctors.

"Worst Pathology working environment"
Added 31 Aug 2013 by a current employee
For nearly two weeks, there was no sanitation on our floor. Nothing was done about it. The executive committee decided that employees will never climb the corporate ladder. Your salary, when you start will only increase annually and that is it. Never will you get a promotion or better yourself. If you are thinking of joining the NHLS, please think twice. Our lab is always dirty, stock is limited and impatient doctors are always on your case.

"disillusioned"
Added 25 Jul 2013 by a current employee
The organisation does not seem to engender good business practice and healthy employee equity values. The upper management appear to grab at any chance to oppress staff (especially the lower income staff), be it as concerning the wages or working conditions/hours. Their wealth distribution promises made at its inception appear distant memories in the face of refusing staff equitable increases on the one hand and spending millions on wasteful (flagrant publicity stunt) 'award' ceremonies on the other.

"Core business of pathology"
Added 19 Jun 2013 by a current employee
Clumsy organisation, because of historical constitution, this remains an excuse not to do the core functions of service. Management is motivated by incorrect KPI's and leadership is unable to understand the core business. Enourmous wastage and inefficiencies with lack of appropriate accountability contribute to ineffective delivery, which harms patients and the health delivery.
