Phumelela Gaming and Leisure Limited, sometimes known simply as Phumelela, are a South African-based horseracing and betting corporation listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). The company owns and operates five racecourses with associated training centres in Gauteng, Free State, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape. They also manage a standalone training centre in the Gauteng region. They stage in excess of 250 race meetings per annum, including the Emerald Cup, the Charity Mile, Champions Day, Summer Cup Day and Triple Crown. They also provide various betting opportunities: primarily focussing on horseracing betting via its “totalisator” system as well as a network of branches, agents, and various ways of digital betting including internet betting websites, telephone betting (telebet) and cell phone betting. Phumelela was listed on the JSE in June 2002 with a BEE shareholding of 27.5%.
