The Rand Mutual Assurance Limited (RMA) was founded in 1894 and registered in 1896, by three mining companies after they saw a gap in the market. It started as a non-profit mutual assurance company with the aim of administering Workman's Compensation Insurance benefits to workers injured in the course of their employment to the South African Mining Sector. They operate under a license from the South African Department of Labour, structuring and providing benefits in agreement with the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA). They also operate under both long and short term insurance licenses issued by the Financial Services Board (FSB), providing services such as funeral cover. RMA currently have seven offices, Johannesburg, Witbank, Rustenburg, Carletonville, Klerksdorp, Welkom and Kimberley; towns which are associated with mining activity and the mining industry in South Africa. Furthermore, they also have satellite offices internationally, including Mozambique and Lesotho.
