The South African Broadcasting Corporation is a state-owned broadcaster and was established in 1936 through an Act of Parliament, and replaced the previous state-controlled African Broadcasting Corporation, formed in 1927. The main aim of the SABC is to supply television and radio broadcasting and information services, as well as services that are related to that aim (educate, entertain and support), to the public within the borders of South Africa and also in countries beyond; like Namibia, Swaziland, Lesotho, Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. They have three official television broadcasting channels (SABC1, SABC2 and SABC3), with an excess of 30 million viewers weekly, as well as 18 radio broadcasting channels which reach more than 25 million listeners. They also have plans in the pipeline to possibly add more television channels to their network, including SABC Sport.

"SABC company review"
Added 13 May 2015 by a current employee
The SABC is a company of great opportunities. Employees are able to enhance their careers through studying, attending courses etc. The salary and benefits are very good compared to private companies. The pension fund and medical aid compares very well to other companies. There are a lot of competent people working at the SABC - they know technology and the industry. However, a lot of the competent staff leaves the institution due to political influences. There is a general feeling of being part of a family but unfortunately politics also plays a role in this institution. This effects the capabilities of the company. The SABC can be the best broadcaster but due to their lack of enhancement they are staying behind if you compare them to a company like Multichoice. The technology is not new and they have still not moved to digital. Decision that are taken by the Board / CEO are not always in the best interest of the company.

"Strict deadlines"

Working at the SABC is a challenge every day and there is so much to learn. You get to meet people, travel a lot and go on training programmes. You have to work long hours sometimes for very little pay. Strict deadlines.
Best companies to work for in the Broadcast media sector.
