"Unstructured System"
Added 12 Jun 2015 by a current employee
The training programmes for employees are very unstructured. I don't understand it. And the reason why I left was because I felt like Sappi was operating on white supremacy.I also feel like the reason why it was so unpleasant working there, was because of poor decisions taken by management.

"Narrow minded executive management "

I worked for Sappi for many years in a senior position. I watched the downfall of a giant due to management decisions that were incomprehensible. Some great people work for Sappi and the learning over the years were valuable. Would I work for them under the current claimant - NO.

"Sappi - Saiccor Mill"
Added 15 Aug 2013 by a current employee
Sappi(Saiccor Mill) is a Special Chemical Cellulose manufacturing company in South Coast of Durban. I won't lie to you, when it comes to training their staff and providing you with tools they are the best. The problem lies with recognition of that training, their remunerations leave a lot to be desired (grades and notches are haywire). You can even find a person with a proper diploma being a general worker yet they say they have talent management programmes in place. Why does these programmes seem invisible?

"Still white dominated"
Added 30 Jul 2013 by a current employee
I became happy to know that I was going to be an Instrument technician for a global company as I worked as an instrument apprentice, but I got a big and shocking surprise to find that white people were more prioritised than black people. We got half training and after training, our contracts got terminated and all the white people we started training with got jobs. I feel SAPPI wasted three years of my life, because now am struggling to get a job because of the half training. I would never advise anyone to apply for a job there.

It was a good company until they told me I'm getting retrenched, because the unions said they only want non whites in my trade operating here and of course, being the only white I was told sorry I got to leave after 24 years of giving my life, been a dedicated, loyal person and all I get is a letter telling me to pack up on 31 December because that would be my last working day.

"Crane technician"

The company should be a world leader and a domestic Icon. There are experienced people working and employed in the group. My experience is with Sappi Stanger Paper Mill. There is a predominant engineering management from the apartheid era, which dominates and suppresses others from achieving advancement due to bias decision making. On the positive side, there are an extremely well educated an experienced work force committed to the company. What a pity to think the South African Industry at this level is dominated by radical elements scch as Holtzhauzen & Welthagen at the Stanger Mill. Perhaps publicity and affirmative action could assist in production and advancement of local talent.

Although I'm not working for Sappi, I was offered a senior position with them upon the completion of my MBA studies at Stellenbosch in 1987. All of my studies was done at Stellenbosch in marketing, operations and finance, which revolved around Sappi. They were very supportive in providing information for me. I was again offered a position with Sappi in 1992 as Production Manager of their mill in Swaziland. Overall, I have a positive view of Sappi.
Best companies to work for in the Wholesale sector.
