"Not a good environment"
Added 13 Jul 2016 by a current employee
I did not enjoy working for this company. I ended up doing far more than I was hired to do and they still paid me the low salary. I only realised how underpaid I was once I started applying for other jobs of the same description.

"Worst company to work for"
Added 03 Jul 2016 by a current employee
After 15 years of loyal employment, One retires to nothing. No gratuity, no retirement package, just a clean walk of shame. That's what you get after 15 years. Rather work for a company that doesn't lie to their employees.

"Never got paid"
Added 17 Jun 2015 by a current employee
I remember I was on high-school and I applied to Shoprite for a festive season Job, so I worked there during November, December and January on a flexible basis. After my last day there, I never received my due. I inquired about it and the manager told me that they are having problems with the system and they're trying to figure out how many hours each of the holiday workers worked, in order to pay them. After numerous attempts of trying to get my money and having to hear excuses all the time, I decided to let it go because it was not worth it.

Great working environment, but the Labour Broker didn't make my life easy. I was forced to work when I was sick once. I would love to go back on a different capacity. Maybe administration because I gained so much experience.

"Worst Company ever worked for."
Added 29 Apr 2015 by a current employee
No time for family. Working hours are too long, Open and Close the Shop. Work 3weekends but only get paid for 2. Only 1 week annual leave. Too much valgur by the Regional managers and Divisional Office people. Treatment is too bad, Shoprite is good on the outside once you get in then you will see what I am talking about.

"Shoprite Head Office review"
Added 29 Apr 2015 by a current employee
Being employed at Shoprite Head office, is like being part of a family. The company does not have a culture of quick hire and fire of staff. People who work there, stay there for long. This is noticeable at the Christmas functions when long service awards are presented to staff with more than 5 years service in the company. Shoprite has a nice friendly, easy-pace work atmosphere, conducive to good career advancement. I would certainly accept a position there again if the opportunity presents itself. The remuneration is good and the company invests in latest technologies. This ensures that staff work with state of the art systems and always maintain high standards.

"Shoprite review"

Operational management works extremely long hours and salaries are low. Fairly aggressive environment with a take it or leave it (referring to employment) attitude. Head office has a very old school approach regarding organisation structure and employee relations, a strong hierarchy and top down approach.

"Management style "
Added 29 Apr 2015 by a current employee
Management stlye of this company is very oppresive and autocratic MANAGERS use abusive language or manner to address their subordinates. There is no regognition of prior learning because your career growth is not dependent on your formal qualifications, its graetly dependent on whether a senior manager likes you or not There is no value for human life despite the risks and dangers that the co operates under where no councelling is given to employees who have bee traumatised by robberies

"A healthy Giant."
Added 29 Apr 2015 by a current employee
A truely remarkable company that saved two of South Africa's biggest retailers from extinction (OK Bazaars & Checkers). From a small base mainly in the Cape they have grown to be,by far, the biggest retailing force in Africa. My years with them where the happiest and most productive of my life and leaving is a regret that I have to this day. There is no doubt that they offer the best pricing and service to their customers.I am not surprised that Pick 'n Pay are losing market share to them.

"What you think is not actually true"
Added 29 Apr 2015 by a current employee
Don't be misled when you look at large chain stores that give perfect impressions. Amazingly the employees on lower levels are not treated with the respect and the culture that the stores my portray. Positions of having leadership my be able to keep the business strong have no idea how to treat people fairly and not be bias. After all its the lower level employees that bring in the most for the organisation. Training and Development seems to only be afforded to the higher levels.

All the reviews I read pertaining to the company being hell are all true. I, myself is working for this company, but I find myself drained and not being the best I can be due to mistreatment and mismanagement. Hours are crazy without any compensation and it is a nightmare, if it's your first working experience. This company, in the media, is a far cry than what it really is. I strongly suggest you don't work for this company as u will be treated like an animal rather than a human being.

"Baddest company!"
Added 12 Oct 2013 by a current employee
I've learned a lot while working there, but not a good place to start a career. Very racist company, but if you can handle the pressure, being traumatised, you will be able to work for Shoprite.

"baddest company iv ever worked for"
Added 08 Oct 2013 by a current employee
I've worked for Shoprite since 2009. In 2010 I was told I'll be writing a management test as i'll be getting a position, but the management took me out of the list of people who were supposed to go write and put his girlfriend "who failed" on it. I love working for the company as I love communicating with people, but Shoprite doesn't pay well. If someone who has to knock off at 20:00hrs bunked work, they'll ask you to knock off at 20:00hrs, but if you tell them that you can't, they'll say you don't respect your seniors and at the end of the day you wont get paid for those hours you sacrificed.

This company will only exploit you. I worked there as a casual and built myself to being manager. It was the worst experience of my life. If you're reading this review, take my advice and look for a job in another company.

"Shoprite holdings ltd"

Assistant manager: I'm working for Shoprite for more than six years now. This is the worse company to work for. We're working very long hours, more than 12 hours everyday, but getting pay for only eight hours. They says we must sacrifice our life for a company. If not, then they don't need us, we can place our resignation letter immediately. They say we can be replaceable in an hour. This is the worse company ever to work for. Their regional manager and divisional manager... it's like they never went to school, they have no manners. They only use foul words when they talk to us.

"Dept Manager"

The worse company I worked for in the past six years with long hours during the week and weekends, without any compensation. Vulgar words are used to staff members including management by their seniors. Discrimination still dominate in senior positions and they don't hide the fact that other racial groups are hired just for compliance, but will not be recognised for growth. They don't apply most of the labour laws.I regret the day I joined this company and wasted my time for career growth with Shoprite.

"Senior Manager"

I have been working for Shoprite/Checkers Hyper since 2010. I have worked long hours (which were not compensated either by monetary value or time off). I open the store at 5am and closed the store at 12/1am every single day. They don't give their staff notice when they are moving managers to different areas. Without any consideration I was moved from the extreme South of Durban to the extreme North of Durban and I had to start the next day at the new location. Taking sick leave is not an option, if you do, your salary is cut at the end of the month. Shoprite has no consideration for the Basic Condition of Employment Act. They are non-compliant with almost every single line item on the BCOE Act.

They are the worst nightmare. They rate themselves so high, but truth is that they are the poor of the poorest companies. The money is Little and the working hours are a nightmare too. In fact, they don't even deserve to be rated at all, because working there is just a job as a result of there not being much jobs in South Africa.
Best companies to work for in the Retail sector.
