"Overlooked for years and no one to turn to"
Added 21 Apr 2015 by a current employee
Company is a good company to work for and has great opportunities but for certain individuals as the management does not treat us equally.I think Standard bank has the responsibility to check if an employee has been in the same grade for years as I have been a teller for almost ten years now and have rotated almost every department in the bank but when the are promotions I get overlooked people who come after me get into positions, while I have the skills and experience.I think this has killed my spirit to want to come to work but I have no choice because I am the breadwinner at home and its so hard to get work out there so I'd rather endure this pain working for this company but itsnt realy the company but people in high positions and the companies HR that is to blame.I plead with this company to do check ups on their employees as they are overlooked when it comes to growth. There used to be people in high positions who would come to the Cash centres as I work there ,they would ask how the treatment was from managers what you did not like and what not but now nothing is being done.how can I deliver good customer service if am not treated well by the company.

"Business Manager (Branch network)"
Added 08 Feb 2015 by a current employee
I started off in Standard Bank as a teller in 2003, the bank was a great and exciting place to work for, hours were great, people were fun, people were happy to serve and sell thus, sales were booming. Eleven years later I was now a business manger, the position I've always strived to be in. I went through every single position in the branches network. I was happy and very hard-working, my hard work was evident in my sales and service results. I applied for a promotion, went for the interview, aced the interview. I was told I was unsuccessful but they couldn't tell me what I did wrong or needed to work on because, I did nothing wrong? So how did I not get the job? Later found out I was not a black female and although I could do the job with my eyes closed, they needed a black female to fufil stats. Salary was great, being a staff member had its perks (interest rates, no waiting in long lines to do my personal banking) our leaders lack leadership and sometimes I wonder how they got the jobs. They tell you straight to your face that if you unhappy working in the bank then you might as well resign as they can find someone else to do your job. Sales was tight as competition is now more fierce. Early mornings and long hours are a requirement, no overtime pay, no family life, money is there, but no time to enjoy it with family, pressure was enormous, service is falling short in every department as people are hired for skin colour and not skill. I would hope they change the stance on hiring and promoting as service and sales are deteriorating due to this, all staff are tired but have nothing else to fall back on so they just carry on working, only the lucky few resign or find other jobs.

"Std Bank happy to loose experienced people"
Added 27 Oct 2013 by a current employee
Worked for the company for 13yrs. I had many favourable opportunites to grow my skills and left as a Manager in this organisation as I was directly affected with retrenchment procedures, relocation to JHB was offered to me but as I am a married woman, I simply couldn't leave everything behind. I was forced to resign. Now, months later there is nobody in Standard Bank that will give me a chance, they say my skin is too white, so Standard Bank is prepared to throw away all the time and money they invested in me. Remember, I was a loyal employee to Standard Bank, but they are definitely not loyal to me. I feel Standard bank takes the transformation targets too far, they gonna feel it in the end, sitting with people without skills and knowledge.

"Worked at Std Bank"
Added 15 Oct 2013 by a current employee
I spend in total 5 years in senior management positions with Standard Bank and in that time I must say that the group policies in terms of HR and people management is among the best that I have seen in my 30 years in the banking industry. However the execution at line level is poor especially in PBB and Ops areas. Managers lack the values that is proclaimed by the organisation and I have seen and experienced the lack of integrity displayed when driving their own individual agenda's. To a point of resorting to actually becoming lairs. Despite the great policies in place, leadership don't practise this and people that challenge this is simply worked out

Standard Bank has a comfortable work place with room to grow and learning new skills. It has fixed hours but often have to work under pressure and with different people. The management is very supportive and you get a good salary and bonuses.

"Working at Standard Bank"
Added 30 Jul 2013 by a current employee
Worked for the company for 38 years. Excellent benefits in the later years as they were not available to female staff when I joined. I had many favourable opportunities to grow my skills and acquire training . My GREAT let down was when I was directly affected with retrenchment procedures. HR was not able to find placement for me within this great, BIG organisation. Not even a part time job! They had invested in all my skill training and THEY could NOT find a place in which to use ALL this knowledge. I left at 55 years and currently enjoying a different lifestyle. Hard at first, however, there are other good people out in the business industries and sometimes we need drastic changes for us to find the other good people.

"should have gone somewhere else"
Added 28 Jul 2013 by a current employee
I have worked one year in the bank and resigning is always on my mind. I am highly qualified but still in a grade 12 position . Too much pressure or sales and less focus on customer service and the staff is placed on positions and then not given support to perform in them.

"Contract Employee"
Added 19 Jul 2013 by a current employee
Standard Bank has embarked upon a journey to modernise their Core Banking systems, starting with those for the Personal & Business Banking sector in 2010 and planning to complete this is 2015. It is obvious that the bank cannot employ all the people required to accomplish this enormous task and they have to rely heavily on contracted staff to complete the work. The problem is the fact that they clearly prefer to employ non-South African contractors, especially from India, to do the most important work of converting their current business to the new system. These people are for the most part badly trained, with no experience at any South African banks, no knowledge of the SA monetary system or laws and only a very basic grasp of the English language. That is when you can actually understand what they're saying, because their accents are atrocious. But Standard Bank's board have decided these people are more worthy to be employed by the bank than South Africans, whose contracts get summarily cancelled if they dare to complain about the pathetic quality of the work being produced by these imports. After being mistreated like this, myself by management and observing first hand the (non)quality of the work being done, I have decided, despite being a customer of the bank for over 30 years, I'll be closing down my accounts with the bank and moving my business elsewhere.

"Awesome Company"

My experience with SBSA was generally fantastic! I was an Account Manager situated at 45 Commissioner. There came an unfortunate time where I was diagnosed with Pneumonia. They came multiple times to visit me in hospital. I was never forced or pressured to rush back to work. I was given enough to recuperate and returned back to work healthy! Batho Pele - they put me first ahead of work. I'll always appreciate that!

"The Good, The Bad, The Ugly"
Added 18 Jul 2013 by a current employee
After working for SBSA for 16 years I decided to call it a day. The expectations from staff to deliver on sales even if it was in a non sales environment was just too much. Having to place staff on Poor performance due to a lack of sales, knowing that they are Service Orientated was just not for me. I made a personal decision that it is not the way I want to do business. During my 16 years at SBSA they treated me well and most of the memories are GOOD. I was however very disappointing when a senior manager once told met that I will not progress any further due to the color of my skin - I was discussed and this would be my BAD. The ugly would have to be, the complaints I still hear from staff, and how they are threatened daily, and nothing is ever good enough. The Bank just want more, more , more - that they are chasing numbers and that there is no effort, whatsoever to retain loyal, experienced staff. Junior people are being promoted to positions where they are unable to cope and then eventually leave or are placed on Poor Performance due to a lack of performance. Overall I consider SBSA a good place to work - not the best but good - I would however like to see them make an effort to hold on to staff with experience and knowledge.
