"Telkom on rocky grounds"
Added 02 Oct 2013 by a current employee
I've been at Telkom for the last year and a couple of months, started as a call centre agent and worked my way up to Ops Manager in 10 months, I've never been a fan of the call center and Telkom did not change my mind about it, report after report, threats of contract cancellations. I've worked my way up and have never been so stressed in my life. I have nothing bad to say about Telkom but will do as they want and move on when the time is right

"Retention"
Added 01 Oct 2013 by a current employee
I started working for Telkom one and half years ago up to date as a retention consultant in the call centre environment. When I got employed it was through an agency and later converted to telkom contractors. I have learnt a lot about systems, customer care, multi tasking and problem solving. As an outsider looking in or rather speaking for the customers, the service is at its lowest and that is the reason why we can't retain a lot of customers lately. I think Telkom should start having a customer based mind and maybe we will keep the rest of the customers we still have, and as their employee, all I can say is, they should learn to take their employees complaints seriously, teach management how to boost staff morale and not get promoted or get an increase because you're the supervisor's favourite, but because of your work.

"Ex Employee"

I started off with Telkom when I began my journey in Tertiary education. I studied through my Bcom Marketing degree with a telkom bursary. At that point of my life, telkom was my hero. I graduated and was placed at the front office of the company called at the time Telkom Direct Shop and I worked there for 4 years and in the duration of the four years, I gained a lot of experience in sales, problem solving, customer service, stock management, Shop management but because I have been a sales consultant for too long, for my liking, I got bored and wanted to seek other challanges so I took the voluntary retrenchment Package on the 30 April 2013. Telkom is one of the few companies that Can provide job security and they also pay well with good benefits. When I was appointed, my benefits were, medical aid, house subsidy, telephone rebate and also gain sharing. A person can learn a lot from telkom

"Ex employee"

I worked for Telkom about 10 years ago and took the voluntary retrenchment package on offer. It was a fantastic Corporate company to work for. One learns a lot about business and different stakeholders in the company. Benefits included a housing subsidy, tel rebate, gain sharing. I am grateful for that. I also got a bursary and managed to complete it while in their employ. However, I was going nowhere with my qualifications. Demographics was the trump card against me and therefore made the decision to leave. If I was allowed to take up a more senior post I could have offered so much value to the company in terms of my degree. As an employee then, Telkom's downfall was always their poor customer service. As an outside customer I see them holding the Olympic torch still in this negative category and have experienced this many times. They need to open a separate call centre for a customer service division. With all my experience and qualifications I could head up this division! Just a suggestion.

In this trying financial times, telkom is in the process of cutting staff and is already busy contracting outsiders to do installations at clients.

"Job security"

I am currently still employed since 2008 , I started as a temp. worker under an agency. we were promised to be converted to permanent employees after 5 years but instead, we are Telkom contractors with no benefits with 6 months contracts. It is wonderful to work in an industry like Telkom. I have learnt a lot. The problem I have is, I've served the company for 5 years with no job security and benefits.
Best companies to work for in the Information technology and services sector.
