I worked for Transnet most of my life. I was in warehousing and the stock controller in various cities. It is a great company and I wouldn't mind going back on any given day.

I worked here for eight years and hope to never return. Senior management structure is purely based on how politically connected you are, while all junior management is purely determined by the same Senior management, union leadership, gossip culture, basically the most pathetic culture I've ever seen.

This is one of the worst managed divisions within Transnet. Things are not done in the best interest of the business and employees, but in the best interest of personal gain and greed of money from top management. 2008 to 2011 The whole of the Cape Town Engineering team was shut down and retrenched very sneakily so that the Durban branch could survive, even though they have been bringing in the least money. All the Cape Town work was taken away and given to the Durban office. Your options were to relocate to Durban on a Cape Town salary or take the package. They got rid of good experienced staff in Engineering, Civil, Structural, Electrical, Architects and Project managers with over 50 years of good experience in total. The funniest thing is BEE even meant nothing to this division. Employees were even targeted by giving them tasks that were known not to work. Basically set up for failure so that they could get rid of you. Almost everybody who were retrenched had to sign a declaration that for 3 years they won't speak out of what has happened. Even all the unions that were involved in this process were bribed to get rid of the staff and management were compensated for achieving this. After all this time, nobody has really mentioned or attempted to go to the media about it. Transnet's policy states that all employees should be treated with dignity and respect. Hogwash doesn't exist. We were treated like dirt. I just want people to be aware of how Transnet's Capital Projects Top Management runs their operations very selfishly and show that there's no respect what so ever. Many of the retrenched workers, up until today have been scared by this outfit.

"Poor company culture"

Transnet claims to be striving to achieve world class company status, but in reality this couldn't be further from the truth. The majority of those that are promoted to high levels are ones that are politically connected, not those that are exceptional performers. This greatly demotivates those that still have self motivation to deliver a personal, solid performance. Employees that are satisfied receiving a decent salary for pitching up to work and not working too hard, will enjoy it at Transnet, but if you have a passion to make a difference and you want to work along side similar minded individuals and want to feel like you have earned your salary at the end of the month, stay away form this company. The bureaucracy and wide spread general apathy and incompetence will drive you crazy. There are small pockets of brilliance in the company, but these are few and far between. The norm is that of a 'blame others' culture. Almost no one admits any fault to enable everyone to learn from it and move on. Instead, it's just a culture of 'cover your own butt' and point fingers at everyone else. Because of this culture, progress is slow and people are doomed to repeat the same mistakes and fall extremely short of the apparent overall company goal of being world class.

I worked for Transnet and resigned in 1995. I worked for various companies, but none of them came near Transnet. I always wanted to go back to Transnet. In April 2012 I got the change to return to Transnet. I am working as an Examiner and Repairer and my co-workers is very nice. My immediate superior is a lady and she will do her best to assist us. Transnet was and is still the best company to work for.

Transnet is a good company, but sometimes it is managed by people without relavent qualifications and I have nine years working for them, but i am weighing my options to resign, because I can't take it anymore.
