The University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg was founded in 1896 as the South African School of Mines in Kimberly. This South African research University is the third oldest South African University after the establishment of UCT (University of Cape Town). It has more than one campus and is situated in the areas of central Johannesburg. The university has approximately an enrolment total of 2.934 students, whereby 4.566 live on campus grounds within their 18 student resident areas. The University is governed by the Council as set out in the Education Act (Act No. 101 of 1997) their responsibility for regulating teaching, research and academic tasks are put on the Senate and the interest of university students are represented by the students and the council. The university currently consists of five academic faculties; Commerce, Law and Management, Environment, Health, Humanities and Science.
