What does an agronomist do?

An agronomist works for the agriculture industry but with a very specific role. They are basically researchers focused on checking soil quality against the crops that will be planted in the area. Aside from learning more about soil quality, they also work with farmers in order to develop better farming conditions through improved planting areas.

Typical work activities of an agronomist?

An agronomist divides their time on the field and on the laboratory. They collect samples while on in the field, talk to farmers and other involved in the industry or introduce different techniques and products that could improve soil quality. While on lab, they often take a closer on different soil samples in order to determine the problems and its causes. An agronomist could work in a much more specific field such as focus on soil erosion, soil quality or infestation.

Training and education requirements?

A 4-year degree in agronomy is often the required education for those interested in pursuing this career. However, a degree related to agriculture can also consider this type of job. The difference of course, is the focused learning on soil. But since agriculture degree also deals with basics in soil quality in relation to agriculture, those who studied agriculture can also be considered in this job. Advancement in this career would often require post-graduate studies which are also required for those interested in to teach in universities and colleges.

Where can I work as an agronomist?

Government employment is always a possibility for an agronomist as they will always require people who can double check the quality of soil for farmers. Non-government organizations will also require their services for the same reason and additional research work. Businesses also hire agronomists especially companies that manufacture fertilizers for soil development. Those with advanced studies can also become professors in agriculture and related courses.

Can I work for myself in this job?

Agronomists can become independent consultants for farmers and small businesses. They can also apply their knowledge in their farming practices.
