I recently left my position at a large South African media house working on community newspapers. While I will always be grateful to the field of community journalism for providing the environment to hone my craft I feel since I have spent the last eight years developing my skills while working as a print and multi-media (online) journalist. I have extensive experience in commercial copy-writing having been the Features writer for the Durban office of Caxton Local Media since January 2014 until moving to the Highway Mail newsroom in 2018. While feature writer I was responsible for all the features in the six newspapers published by the Highway Mail as well as some of the advertorials and online stories for clients for Get It magazine. As a senior journalist in the Highway Mail newsroom I worked as a multi-media reporter and the sole editorial contributor for the biweekly Queensburgh News print edition as well as the Highway Mail website. I also occasionally stepped in for the digital coordinator or other reporters when they were on leave. After the changes in the last two years of my tenure at Caxton Local during the Covid-19 Pandemic I became aware of how important flexibility is in a career in the media, so worked towards upskilling myself to enable me to provide content for a variety of news outlets. I also worked at the skills I had honed as a feature/commercial writer with an aim to offer commercial clients ghostwriting, copywriting, technical writing, editing and other services including editing and proofing.
