After early retirement, as a state official (Deputy Director) in 2016, in financial administration and project/process management, after 14 years, my most recent employment as a franchisee provided a platform to learn micro business and the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge of business management and competitive advantage. After completion of a Masters of Business Leadership degree at UNISA in 2014 it was logical to make a transition to private sector in order to gain practical knowledge and experience of the business and economic environment. A typical work day at Pizza and Burger Perfect (fast food franchise) commences at 9 am and ends at 22:00 pm after having counted stock and cashing up end of day. Planning for the day occurs the previous day and includes marketing- and operations activities, amongst other activities. The store was open 7 days a week, including public holidays. As an owner/operator/manager most of the financial- (including tax returns), administration and operations management functions were my responsibilities. Being trained and having worked in all the departments of this take away restaurant, have given me the advantage to fill positions when personnel is absent from work; including the cash register. Staff attrition rate is high amongst fast food restaurants but because of an effective HR strategy as well as competitive salaries I have managed to retain staff for more than one year. Although staff satisfaction and ultimately -retention is the greatest challenge, it offered me insight into the lives of general workers and comprehension of their challenges and this led to rigorous implementation of internal controls. The store was sold due to long hours and quality of life. I also hold two B Degrees, i.e. BA Business and B-Tech Public Management. I am able to adapt to any business environment and one strong point is that I am inquisitive and alway willing to learn, even if it entails me starting at bottom line in a company.
