My name is Jarryd Naicker, I am 24 years old. Ever since primary school I have had a passion for mathematics and science. At the beginning of high school, I knew I wanted to study chemical engineering as it was a course that was in aligned with my interests and strengths. I have always loved solving challenging problems and the various processes that is encompassed by chemical engineering, fascinated me. I graduated with honours in chemical engineering from UCT on the 4th of April 2018. During my time at university, this course has really improved my time management skills as there are assignments with deadlines every week. Most of the projects were group-based which led to my teamwork skills being developed, it also showed me how crucial synergy is when completing a task. Academically speaking I have achieved a 70% aggregate for my degree as I am hard working and determined to give my best effort in everything I do. My real abilities were tested in the final year design project, where each group member had to design a section of an acrylonitrile production refinery. I was tasked with modelling a catalytic distillation in engineering software (ASPEN+). I was the first person to model this area of the refinery in the class, and my individual report received 71%. My research project on catalyst design also achieved the highest mark for the UCT class of 2017 with a score of 85%. I am currently working at Natref, for a company responsible for dosage of various chemicals to ensure stable production and operation of the process units. From my work experience I have become proficient in the understanding of the Crude Distillation Unit, Amine systems as well as Diesel Hydrotreating unit. I have been responsible for ensuring that fouling and corrosion rates are at a minimum in these process units and I give feedback to the unit engineers in the form of daily, weekly, monthly reports and presentations.
