I am a well rounded civil engineering technologist with 18 years experience in the built environment. Having started my career in construction I received a hands-on feel for what my chosen career entailed. I moved into consulting for a well known firm and cut my teeth on design at a young age in their local water division. Having progressed up to project management, I worked on what was referred to as Blue Chip Projects in the greater Durban area at my next employer, which set the foundation for my passion in the field of infrastructure, even though my bachelor's degree was more geared towards transportation and urban planning. After the energy of World Cup 2010 in South Africa, our industry evolved from construction towards maintenance of our assets, and I found myself in a new environment of water preservation. There was a high regard internationally for projects involving water loss and delivery of potable water to communities. Unfortunately it was only a 3 year contract for the local municipality and I was employed as a consultant. This resulted in me making it my ambition to be employed by the local municipality and my goal was achieved, albeit in a slightly different role – that of regional technologist. My responsibilities were at their most diverse at this point, as I worked for a maintenance department which handled technical issues for the Roads and Stormwater Department. In this role I oversaw 20 suburbs, dealt with various stakeholders as well as the general public, while providing technical assistance to on the ground teams for a localised depot and concurrently ran projects with external contractors on behalf of the municipality. An interesting facet of this role was that I took on a railway portfolio for the entire Ethekwini Region, as we handled all railway sidings from our Regional Office. This proved to be most exciting in recent memory, as I was not trained in this field so it gave me a new parcel of experience to add to my credentials, which I maintained for several years. Thereafter I relocated to Cape Town for a contract as a Project Manager for a local Civil Engineering service provider (SMME) within the Oil and Gas industry at Astronenergy (Previously Chevron or historically Caltex) Refinery. At the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, I relocated to Durban and have been since doing freelance consulting work for various Engineering Practices as well as SMME contracting firms . Please do not hesitate contact me and discuss any particulars of my employment history further as I look forward to be of service to you. Regards Mr. J. Bowes (***)-***-**** or (***)-***-****
