KEY EXPERIENCE Johan van Straaten is a civil engineer, whose 34 years’ experience has been in the field of road design, ranging from rural single carriageway roads to urban multi-lane freeways. In recent years he has specialised in the design of rural/municipal roads and streets where he has been involved with all the municipal services that are related to design and construction in a rural environment and also with rural development planning and management. He has extensive experience of multi-disciplinary and multi-teamed projects and the detailed programming and co-ordination that is necessary to achieve the satisfactory completion of the project by integration of the functions of different disciplines and specialists. His wide ranging experience of the various elements involved on large civil engineering projects allows him to perform the function of project manager for these aspects. His experience of and insight into the practicalities of undertaking the work ensures that he is properly qualified to undertake the position of Project Manager in charge of Technical Design. His close involvement with the local authorities means that he is familiar with the procedures and methodology that they employ. Since retirement in 2002, work inter alia on a fixed term basis as an Engineer’s Representative on Sanral roads projects for the period 2008 to 2013. From July 2013 to August 2014 he acted as a Mentor and Acting Engineer’s Representative to an all-women’s supervisory team on a pilot roads project of GDRT. The purpose of the project is to strengthen and enhance the position of women in the civil engineering industry. From December 2015 to September 2016 he Managed the Candidacy Programme of 200 Candidates registered with the six Built Environment Professional Councils and 40 Professionals appointed for the mentoring of the candidates. The mentoring of Engineering Candidates registered with ECSA From October 2016 to July 2017 he acted as a Engineer’s Representative on Sanral re-seal roads projects
