Trained as a Social Anthropologist, I have pursued two passions in my professional life: transformative teaching and programme design in education, and building collective community-driven change through grassroots organizing and philanthropy in the education sector. Through both of these pathways I have pursued my commitment to creating a world that is more equitable for all – whether it was through small scale programs working with young people in Khayelitsha, setting up skills exchanges between under- and over- resourced universities, administering funding to organisations addressing children’s ability to fulfil their potential, or running a program that trains up to 70 youth leaders a year in critical questions of how to run a city for all its citizens, not just a few. I have always been driven by a core belief that education is a transformative tool, not just as a means for addressing social inequalities, but also as a space for personal development. My work in education has been defined by the dual quest to create academically rigorous programs, which also support individuals in a holistic approach. I believe that students cannot learn well unless they are well, and educational institutions which wish to produce generations of scholars must also create systems to support those young scholars as they emerge into their full potential. My work has focused on designing transformative educational programs, the realization of socio-economic rights in post-apartheid South Africa, including housing and education, and on elevating the rights and wellbeing of young people. I have worked at these issues both with the objective of creating structural and societal change, and with the intention of facilitating personal transformation and empowerment for youth. Colleagues have described me as high-energy, organized, principled, innovative, committed to participatory leadership and able to build strong programs from vision to completion. I am skilled and experienced at complex problem-solving, institutional diplomacy and relationship-building, conflict resolution, diversity training, organizational transformation and leading teams through processes of change. My leadership style is rooted in the desire to elevate those around me, a commitment to accountability and to lead with enough self-awareness and strength to always hold space for feedback and engagement. My time spent designing and running education programs in the USA, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Senegal, India, Vietnam and South Africa has deepened my ability to work in varying political and cultural contexts, and manage teams of academics and practitioners globally. My work of the last fifteen years has given me deep practice in working with a diverse range of actors from students from all walks of life, city Mayors, to United Nations Special Rapporteurs, journalists, academic leaders, community activists and students. I am practical, organized, and strongly self-motivated, with five years of experience running a large international programme and team while working from home.
