Over the past 17 years I have rendered my services on a freelance basis to various customers ranging from small and medium size businesses to large international corporations as a principle design engineer and project engineer, project manager, design and engineering manager, technical project specialist, technical advisor and consultant. I have managed and lead commissioning teams, sub-contractors, multi-disciplinary engineering teams, construction and installation crews as well as various design and drawing offices. I obtained a National Higher Diploma (heavy current) and a B-tech degree (electrical, power engineering) and have 30 years of experience, with increasing responsibilities, to offer. Electrical, instrumentation, process control and mechanical experience were gained in an electrical generation environment (Eskom thermal power plants, pump storage schemes and PV solar farms). I have many years of experience in power generation and industrial related projects on a design, commissioning and project engineer level. I worked on electrical as well as control and instrumentation projects. I filled a senior technical/consulting role on utility scale (25 - 75MW) solar PV projects. I have good knowledge of the national grid code (for renewable energy installations in SA). I have done feasibility studies, designs and cost estimates for grid connections of various solar PV parks and other Independent Power Producers (IPP’s): e.g. underground coal gasification (UCG). I did basic designs on PV plant layouts, using AutoCad and have limited knowledge of PVSysts. I am a professional individual who has worked as lead engineer on industrial and petrochemical projects. In addition, I was engaged in various protection/substation automation, plant automation, material handling and mining projects at design, commissioning and project engineer level. I was an electrical design engineer as well as systems engineer in the Oil and Gas division at Siemens working on the Transnet Pipeline upgrade projects as well as the NMPP project. On this project I gained knowledge and experience on Siemens S7 PLC hardware specifically where the PLC interfaces with electrical equipment (e.g. motor control and switchgear). I was also involved in commissioning and maintenance aspects at power stations: the world’s largest indirect cooled, coal fired power station (Kendal power station) and the return to service of a mothballed coal fired plant (Arnot power station – units 4 to 6), as well as maintenance consulting for an independent power producer (Kelvin power station). I managed various projects using the Performance Measurement Baseline principles to manage the technical aspects, the time schedule and project costs. I managed various smaller projects simultaneously. I also do electrical designs / drawings (varying in complexity) - using the latest version of AutoCAD - such as: single line diagrams, schematic diagrams, cable diagrams, etc. In addition, I do detail electrical panel layouts for manufacturing purposes. I can do detailed designs / drawings for LV, MV and HV control systems and preliminary substation layouts for feasibility studies.
