I started my education with a focus on Mathematics were I finished Pure Mathematics and have up to third year knowledge of Statistics at the Nelson Mandela University. I then realized I had a strong interest in data science and in 2018 applied and was accepted as one of the 100 students from the pool of 8,000 applicants to participate in the year-long Explore Data Science Academy. In the Academy I gained both theoretical and practical data science experience as well as business communication skills. I learned the core fundamentals of problem solving, including problem definition and gathering, analysing, visualizing and communicating data to solve the problem. I learned how to gather and organise data with SQL, learned to program, analyse data and build models with machine learning in Python, I also learned how to visualise data in Microsoft Power BI and became proficient in tools such as Microsoft Excel, Cloud Computing and Professional Communication . My practical experience really pushed my learning forward as I was able to solve real world problems. For instance, in the Cape Town Water Crisis project we analysed the factors affecting water supply and demand, and I personally did contributed to Database Design (PostgresQL), data cleaning and model building. In the Prediction of Personality Profiles project we predicted individuals personalities based on text data and I contributed with data cleaning and model building and personally learned about how useful Natural Language Processing can be. In other projects I also learned gathering data from different sources, mining data, storing and managing this data with SQL or No-SQL database tools , analysing it and building suitable models with Python and lastly visualizing it in Microsoft Power BI. Within the last three months I combined these skills in my BCX internship where we were building live dashboards for different Iot related projects that their clients asked them to do . I now feel confident to start full-time employment as a Junior Data Scientist.
