I am a Social Scientist and Public Engagement Specialist with over a decade of experience in the NPO and development sector. I hold an Honours degree in Social Anthropology and a Master's Degree in Political Studies, the latter with distinction. My specialization lies in the informal (township economic) sector, and I have conducted extensive field research in South African townships, rural areas, and informal settings. Since entering the NPO and development sectors in 2010, my expertise has revolved around community engagement, participatory facilitation, and advocating for the voices of marginalized communities to address inequalities. One of my notable contributions was to the Formalising Informal Micro-Enterprises (FIME) national business mapping project, where I played a key role in generating valuable primary data on the informal grocery retail sector known as Spaza Shops. Through my work, I have also developed proficiency in utilizing Participatory Visual Methods (PVM), including Digital Storytelling, Photovoice, Hand-mapping, and Collaborative Filmmaking. I have been involved in an international project focused on political accountability, employing mobile and digital technology tools. This initiative aimed to foster inclusive and accountable governance within communities. Until very recently, I was employed as a Community Engagement and Public Facilitation Specialist at The Safety Lab, where my primary focus was on neglected spaces, violence reduction, and poverty alleviation. In that role, I was responsible for conducting community-based research, working closely with youth in informal areas, and facilitating programs to build community safety and reduce violence. I am dedicated to promoting participatory approaches and inclusive governance, ensuring that citizen voices are heard, and addressing the challenges faced by marginalized communities. Overall, I have dedicated the past 14 years of my career to making a positive impact, empowering marginalized communities, and advocating for social change where it is most needed. I am committed to leveraging my expertise in community engagement and participatory methods to foster inclusive and accountable practices in both the development sector and beyond. In the years leading up to 2010, I gained valuable professional experience in South Africa, contributing to a diverse range of roles and responsibilities including: - Market Pulse International (2006-2007): I served as a member of the Survey Quality Assurance team and later took on the role of national field operations coordinator at Market Pulse International, a market research company specializing in Mystery Shopping and Retail Audits. This role involved ensuring the quality and accuracy of survey data. - Mastermind Tobaccos (2004-2006): During my tenure at Mastermind Tobaccos, I focused on conducting Brand Awareness Market Research. Additionally, I managed key distribution channels and provided essential logistical support to ensure the smooth flow of operations. - ABSA Group Limited (1998-2004): I worked with ABSA Group Limited, formerly known as Amalgamated Banks of South Africa, for six years. In this role, I served as both a frontline and bulk cashier, handling customer inquiries and branch administration tasks. - University of Cape Town (2001-2003): At the University of Cape Town's Anthropology Department, I contributed as a tutor and provided student support, helping to foster an environment of academic growth and learning. Furthermore, outside of my professional endeavors, I am a dedicated practitioner of Karate and hold the distinction of a First-degree Black Belt (Senior Shodan). I am an active member of Kimura Shukokai Karate International (South Africa South Affiliation), where I continue to develop my martial arts skills and contribute to the community. These experiences and memberships have enriched my skills, broadened my horizons, and contributed to my personal and professional growth.
