My name is Sihle Kumkani. I completed my matriculation in 2016, and I then enrolled in my higher education at Cape Peninsula University of Technology in the National Diploma for Industrial Engineering. I completed the diploma in 2020, and I continued enrolling in my higher education in the Advanced Diploma for Quality, which I completed in 2022. Currently, I am registered as an honors degree student in engineering management at the same institution (Cape Peninsula University of Technology). During my National Diploma in Industrial Engineering, I was employed at Transnet Freight Rail for my in-service training as a P1 and P2 student. With the excellent work that I did, I was a project manager for a Lean Six Sigma project for Solethu Turn Around Time Reduction. The objective of the project was to reduce offloading TAT in Solethu from 64.53 hours to 42.3 hours. Excessive or high TAT in Solethu siding was identified as one of the key contributing factors to volume losses. The objective was fulfilled because 60% of the hours were reduced, and the financial benefit was R2.4 million. I was then Yellow Belt certified for the project (certificate attached). After the completion of my in-service training, I was employed as an Industrial Engineering Intern at Donaldson Company in Cape Town, where I did an improvement project using root cause analysis to improve the workstation for the operators, and the results were that the operator’s performance was improved by 21%. In my time at the mentioned employer (TFR & Donaldson Company), I was able to: • Provide efficient support to Production to improve the processes and the productivity through implementation of lean manufacturing principles and standard ways of working. • Create a weekly report for the mainline delays using data extracted from the SAP system. • Training operators for white belt lean six sigma for awareness. • Conduct Time Studies and Implement Kanban technique at the telemeter room. • Continuous improvements projects to increase efficiency, reduce cost, and improve OHS. • Organize and manage the secure and effective flow of both paper and electronic documents during the service design process to guarantee that authorized workers can access them when needed. I pride myself on being organized, detail oriented and truly collaborative. Not only can you count on me to show up and get the job done, I make it a priority to learn all I can to improve what I know and what I can offer my employer.
