I graduated from the University of the Western Cape in a Bsc in Medical Biosciences and went on to obtain an honours degree in Medical sciences at the University of Cape Town majoring in Infectious Diseases and Immunology. I am currently awaiting results of my master’s dissertation which is an Msc (Medicine) specialising in Chemical & Systems biology. Studying in the Medical field has been a dream of mine for quite some time, dating back to my days at Dale College Boys’ High School where I had taken the decision that I want to have a hand in ensuring the health and safety of my peers and those around me. In my time there, I had taken up the mantle of being the Deputy Head of First Aid and a peer promoter for SANBS, all linking towards the cause of helping my peers being educated about Health risks and safety. I had held countless leadership positions during my senior years in high school including Vice Captain of 1st team cross country, Secretary of Poetry society, Co-Head of the interschool poetry society, Treasurer of the Matric Dance Committee and Executive member of the Choir Committee. In the various committees I served under, I sought only to provide the best service to my peers and staff. My attitude to bring out the best results in all I do saw me being awarded with an awards Blazer for double Half colours for Service in First Aid, Half colours for sporting prowess in Cross country and a merit award for service to the school in all respects. After high school, I enrolled in UWC. I was enlisted on the Deans’ merit list and was invited to be a member of the Goldenkey Honour Society following my freshman year. In my time at UWC I have also been involved in other societies including Enactus where I served under a subcommittee called Unibuy as the Head of Marketing. I was also affiliated with UNASA where I was pivotal in many outreach programmes including Action15 and helping Malawi. I was also one of 40 individuals selected out of the entire University for the Emerging Leaders Programme in 2015. I received the standout leader award 2015 for my excellent service to Absip UWC. At UWC I majored in Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Microbiology taking on a number of Biotechnology courses as electives. My time at UCT has been nothing short of bliss. I was involved with the UCT cardiac and surgical societies and continue to develop and hone my skills in the medical field. During my time at UCT I enrolled in a Bsc (Honours) in Medical Sciences where I majored in Infectious Diseases & Immunology where I was awarded the South African Research Chair Honors Bursary. I thereafter enrolled in Msc (Medicine) in Chemical & Systems Biology which combines Biochemistry and Biotechnology in terms of methodological approaches. I was awarded the NRF Masters Innovation Bursary and the South African research Chair Masters Bursary. I have learnt and mastered many skills such as molecular cloning (pcr, restriction digests, gel electrophoresis, DNA ligation), I was placed in charge of a tissue culture suite in 2018-19 where the day to day activities, cleaning and supplies were taken care for by me. In this suite I learnt to work extensively with production cell lines such as human embryonic kidney cells and Chinese hamster ovary cell. Moreover, I learnt to culture various types of tumour cells in preparation for downstream processes specific to the lab. I also learnt protein purification using the AKTA system and protein confirmation practices such as SDS and Western blot. In addition to all this, I’ve learnt to analyse and process data computationally using Microsoft Office, FlowJo and other analytical platforms. The human body is quite a marvel and the immune system sparks interest with its complexities. This programme will allow me to reach my goal of ultimately making new medications that will strengthen the human immune system and eventually eradicate diseases affecting the immune system. I look to follow this path all the way through to PhD level because I truly believe in the idea of a lifelong scholar and seek to hold true its values. I was affiliated with the Medical Biotechnology and Immunology group at UCT under the supervision of professor Stefan Barth and the knowledge attained this year have been beyond compare but I feel I have yet to reach my full potential. I dream of being able to apply my teachings in Africa at large. My time serving in UNASA showed me how much of a difference we can make on this continent in an ecosocial manner. I want to eventually be able to provide therapies that are freely available to people increasing their quality of life. The health of African is a great priority, more especially now that we are in a rapidly progressive era with a lot of countries shifting from third world mentalities to a modernized theme. Ensuring their health is taken care of ensures that we have the manpower required to bolster economic growth in our continent. My accolades speak to my core qualities. I am able to immerse myself amongst the people and have a solid work ethic. I seek to inspire and be inspired by those around me and constantly push the envelope for success. I believe I am an exceptional candidate for this programme because I am self-willed, I do not fear pushing for the boundaries for excellence and I genuinely have people’s interests at heart. I believe my attitude, fiery desire and focus toward the cause and goal makes me motivated to not only complete my postgraduate career but also excel in my professional career. My training in this field has taught me to be able to provide the highest quality in everything I do and I believe I can be an asset in this position I am applying for. I am looking forward to your correspondence and hope you will take this letter into consideration when making the final decision.
