Thembela “Terra” Dick is a Cape Town-born Filmmaker, Photographer, Video Editor, Educator, a continuous learner, and a self-proclaimed Visual Activist. Terra has over 12 years of experience documenting the lives of Black people in South Africa. Terra’s focus is on the youth, women, children and the LGBTIAQ+ community. Terra uses her artistic approach to film and photograph the journey of South African communities and abroad. Terra holds multiple photographs and filmmaking qualifications from various institutions such as; the University of Cape Town, The Market Photo Workshop and World Film Collective amongst others. Terra directed a 22-minutes documentary called Thokozani Football Club (Team Spirit) in Umlazi, KwaZulu Natal. The film has been showcased in more than 38 countries in LGBTIAQ+ film festivals worldwide and continues to be used as an educational resource to educate communities about the LGBTIAQ+ people in South Africa. Terra has shot over 250 films with Street Talk stories; season 2-6 and was a DOP and a participant for a documentary called Foot for Love of Le De Gommes in Paris and Gugulethu 60 as a second DOP, Camera Assistance and Participant. Terra has volunteered as a Director of Photography (DOP), Editor, Photographer and Lecturer for Inkanyiso Organization; documenting and traveling worldwide with the founder of the organization Professor/Sir. Zanele Muholi. Terra has filmed Talks at BAAD, Vassar Colleges, New York University and Duke University in the USA amongst other institutions. Terra has written multiple articles for Inkanyiso and has co-facilitated the Photo XPerience project in five South African Provinces i.e. equipping young people from poor backgrounds with a camera and basic photography skills. Currently, Terra is running her start-up media company; TD Productions that documents authentic African stories on women, children, and LGBTIAQ+ people.
