As an experienced researcher, synthetic chemist and chemistry lecturer, I believe my technical expertise in laboratory operations and training will be a great benefit to your company. I am in the final stages of completing my PhD degree in organometallic chemistry at the University of Pretoria. In the preceding 8 years of post-graduate laboratory research, I have refined my problem-solving abilities and learnt to view difficult situations from many vantage points to identify the most rewarding solutions. I have worked on projects involving the detection of trace amounts of insect pheromones, the optimisation of protocols for the synthesis of large biological molecules for TB-diagnosis, and determining the amount of air pollutants pedestrians are exposed to from passing motor vehicles. I have conducted research into the properties of novel liquid crystals, and the development of complex molecules that may be able to use light to drive chemical reactions. Troubleshooting of research procedures and equipment has formed a daily part of my research, and careful logging of observations and data have enabled me to identify impending faults before they become a problem. Working in a large research group with limited funding has taught me the importance of balancing conservative resource management with critical capital investments. Well trained and equipped staff and group members are crucial to the safety, and ultimate success, of the entire team. I am energised by the pursuit of solutions to challenging problems and seeing our solutions applied to the problem at hand. I enjoy training people in skills that I have learned and equipping them to strive for excellence in their own work and private life. As a full-time student, I had taken up short term contracts as a tutor, demonstrator and lecturer of chemistry since mid-2008 to gain work experience and supplement our household income. Through the past 12 years of part-time work, I have seen the resilience and fervour that a respectful leader and trainer can inspire in their team. I hope to be such a leader to my team in our search for innovative solutions to problems that our plant or customers may face. Thank you for your consideration for this position. I look forward to putting my laboratory training and problem-solving skills to work for your company.
